"The term “tar heel” dates back to North Carolina’s early history, when the state was a  leading producer of supplies for the naval industry. To call someone a “tar heel” was to imply they that they worked in a lowly trade. During the Civil War, North Carolina soldiers flipped the meaning of the term, and turned an epithet into an accolade. They called themselves “tar heels” as an expression of state pride."

I know this was like my longest commentary on a pl8, but I felt like it was necessary! Besides, it made me think about how hot the weather is right now in Texas and how much worse it would have been back then without air conditining!
